Abstract

This article examines the functional aspects of Italian neologisms in modern journalistic discourse, particularly their role in reflecting social, cultural, and technological changes. The study explores the main prerequisites for the emergence of neologisms in contemporary Italian vocabulary, focusing on the influence of technological advancements, digitalization, and internet communication. The author identifies six primary functions of neologisms: nominative, informative, aesthetic, pragmatic, communicative, and cognitive, each of which plays a distinct role in mass media discourse. A specific subtype of the informative function-informative-compressive – is also highlighted. This function involves linguistic compression (abbreviation) as a strategy for efficient information transmission. The analysis is based on a corpus of examples from contemporary Italian periodicals, including Corriere della Sera and Il Sole 24 ORE. The study underscores the importance of each function in linguistic practice, emphasizing how neologisms contribute to language adaptation in response to evolving societal and communicative needs. Additionally, attention is given to the potential impact of these linguistic innovations on media consumption and public discourse, illustrating their role in shaping contemporary language use.
