Abstract

In the contemporary information space, media perform not only communicative but also ideological and cognitive functions, which makes the translation of French media texts into Ukrainian particularly relevant. French media discourse is characterized by cultural references, implicit meanings, and complex semantic organization that often resist direct translation. The study aims to identify and classify the main types of semantic structures in French media texts and to determine effective strategies for their adequate reproduction in Ukrainian, taking into account linguocultural and pragmatic factors.

The research combines cognitive-discursive analysis, comparative translation analysis, a semiotic approach, and contextual interpretation. The corpus consists of articles published in Le Monde, Le Figaro, Libération, and the online editions of France 24, France Inter and BFMTV.

The analysis revealed three groups of semantic structures that create the greatest translation difficulties: cultural-cognitive, ideologically marked, and structural-logical. Experimental translations of selected media fragments without official Ukrainian versions demonstrated the effectiveness of several translation strategies, including functional substitution, modulation, adaptive transcoding, explicitation of implicit meanings, and compensation. In cases of significant cultural or semantic divergence, intratextual explanations and translator’s notes proved useful for preserving meaning and pragmatic effect.

The findings show that the reproduction of semantic structures in French media texts requires not only linguistic competence but also intercultural, discursive, and media awareness. The study emphasizes the importance of developing translation approaches that ensure accurate communication of implicit meanings and cultural specificity. Future research may focus on the translation of French media discourse in the context of hybrid warfare, corpus-based identification of semantic gaps, and the potential of neural machine translation for rendering culturally marked and implicit content.
