The article examines linguistic markers of cultural identity in Italian literary prose at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, based on the novels by A. Baricco, M. Mazzantini, and E. Ferrante. The relevance of the study is determined by the need for a comprehensive investigation of linguistic units as bearers of ethnocultural information in literary texts. The textual representation of cultural identity is viewed as a semiotic structure actualized through a system of linguocultural codes – combinations of meanings that reflect a particular ethnic group’s worldview. The methodological framework of the study encompasses semiotic, linguocultural, and contextual-interpretive methods.
The analysis of the empirical material demonstrates that the textual modeling of Italians’ national and regional everyday life is achieved through the interpenetration of spatial, artifact, gastronomic, somatic, and spiritual cultural codes, whose semiotic boundaries are blurred within the literary text. The interaction of these codes is represented by a system of linguistic markers, among which, at the level of nomination, realia lexemes and lexical lacunae are identified. Such units may function as autonomous linguoculturemes or, in synergy, form text-level linguoculturemes. The content plane of these textual formations represents established everyday rituals, culinary traditions, and communicative scenarios of the characters. The combination of kinesic constructions and interjections reproduces an ethnospecific type of emotional communication and actualizes sociocultural content, namely, the authentic Italian way of everyday life.
