Abstract

The article proposes and theoretically substantiates a three-level cognitive-pragmatic model for describing the manipulative potential of Ukrainian phrasemes, designed for automated natural language processing within the TextAttributor 2.0 system. The study addresses the problem of identifying implicit manipulative influence in digital media discourse. The authors substantiate the notion of the “illocutionary potential” of an autonomous phraseme considered outside any context, arguing that its internal form, axiological semantics, and stereotypical scenario constitute a cognitive matrix from which a corresponding manipulative intention is predictably actualized in a communicative act.

Drawing on axiological semantics and pragmatic directionality, the proposed framework distinguishes three types of manipulative influence: positive (meliorative) manipulation, negative (pejorative) manipulation, and intensification of influence. Positive manipulation operates through cooperative strategies of solidarity, complimentary attribution, and the reframing of negative events; negative manipulation – through strategies of discreditation, emotional blackmail, and communicative control; intensifiers amplify manipulative pressure through hyperbolization and a totality effect.

The descriptor hierarchy structures manipulative potential as a systematic chain: strategy (perlocutionary goal) – tactic (illocutionary scenario) – technique (locutionary packaging). The model comprises 48 formalized description schemas with alphanumeric coding of descriptors. Its testing on a sample of 1,000 phrasemes drawn from a crowdsourced database confirms that the inventory of descriptors is sufficient. The model provides a formalized basis for classifying phrasemes, for the statistical assessment of the manipulative potential of the Ukrainian phraseological system, and for the algorithmic identification of manipulation in media analytics and cognitive security applications. The study was conducted within the research project “Linguistic Expert Analytics of Ukrainian-Language Destructive Online Content Using Artificial Intelligence Technologies” (R&D project No. 25BP044-02, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv).
