UKRAINIAN ADAPTATIONS OF ARGENTINE ZAMBA: TRANSLATION STRATEGIES

Abstract

Adaptation is a type of song translation designed to be performed to the original musical accompaniment. Unlike a standard translation, such kind of adaptation is a new, independent text based on the poetic work. Its primary goal is to preserve the emotional coloring and mood of the folklore piece, ensuring the song's expressiveness remains intact by conveying its essence rather than the literal meaning of every individual unit. Consequently, an adaptation may not always reflect the content of every specific unit, it must embody the overall mood and soul of the song while aligning with the musical pattern.

Argentine Zamba is a romantic, slow-tempo partner dance performed with light handkerchiefs. It is characterized by vocals accompanied by guitar and percussion on the bombo, a local drum. Typically, a zamba consists of two parts, each containing two verses and a chorus. As a vital element of Argentina's national culture, the zamba is an integral part of the country’s folkloric heritage.

The article explores the methods of creating a Ukrainian-language literary text that adapts the Argentine zamba. It also analyzes the factors determining the choice of metaphors that correlate with the original source text.
