Abstract

The article focuses on the violation of role expectations by speakers with asymmetric statuses in the process of dialogical speech. The study is based on the materials of the English-language series ‘Suits’, specifically, on film dialogues as they are close to real communication, and film characters are representatives of various professions, so this means that they represent different social values, points of view and beliefs. During the analysis of the empirical material self-praise tactic was revealed which is implemented by a subordinate in order to modify their status and/or the status of a chief. It was found out that the use of this tactic allows a subordinate to strengthen their status in the eyes of a chief, provided that self-praise tactic is realized successfully. Traits and qualities which become a subject of subordinate`s self-praise are highlighted as well as reasons for the use of this tactic. Speech acts used to implement the self-praise tactic, and lexical means, which are typical when verbalizing the tactic are singled out.
